About Me
Welcome to Tutoring By Mae, where every student's potential is nurtured and celebrated! I'm Maegan “Mae” Martin, and I although I am not a formal teacher, I am truly passionate about helping students succeed in their academic journey. As a firm believer in the power of education and growth, I have dedicated myself to creating a learning environment that fosters curiosity, creativity, and the development of essential skills.
My Philosophy
My philosophy centers around the belief that every student possesses the innate potential to achieve greatness. As a tutor, I see it as my responsibility to cultivate this potential by providing a supportive and stimulating atmosphere for learning. During my time at the University of North Alabama, where I pursued my undergraduate and graduate education, I explored a wide variety of disciplines, strengthening my skills in critical analysis, logic and reasoning, and resource utilization.
I find immense joy in witnessing the "light bulb" moment in a student's eyes when they grasp a concept and can connect it to real-world situations. When I meet with a student, my primary concern is not merely imparting course content, but equipping students with the resources and skills they can apply to a multitude of scenarios in their lives.
My Education
My academic journey has been enriched with 2+ years of academic research experience and 5+ years of leadership experience, all of which have equipped me with a diverse skill set to support students' learning and growth.
As a research assistant for West Ed, I worked with students K-3, collecting data on reading, letter, and number fluency, as well as literacy. This experience not only deepened my understanding of early education but also allowed me to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment for young learners.
Additionally, my time as a peer tutor enabled me to guide students in natural and social sciences, helping them understand complex course material and develop effective study strategies. I found that using real-world analogies and fostering metacognition were valuable tools to promote higher-order thinking and understanding.
As a leader in student organizations like the University of North Alabama Psychology Club, the UNA Honors College, and Psi Chi (International Honors Society of Psychology), I organized academic events and seminars, honing my communication and organizational skills.
Moreover, by completing the UNA Preparing Future Faculty Program, I sharpened my critical thinking and public speaking abilities, valuable assets in guiding students to effectively understand complex topics and articulate their ideas.
In conclusion, my diverse experiences in research, leadership, and various academic disciplines have uniquely equipped me to be a compassionate, adaptable, and effective tutor. I am committed to empowering students to unlock their full potential, foster curiosity, and thrive academically and personally. By drawing from my varied background and employing personalized teaching strategies, I am confident in my ability to create a positive and engaging learning environment that will inspire students to excel and embrace their educational journey.
